The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has partnered with REX Insurance to provide weather-based insurance solutions during the official Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signing ceremony on Monday.
, The Director General of NiMet, Prof. Charles Anosike, announced that the collaboration is to protect Nigerian farmers from the devastating financial impacts of droughts, floods, and other climate-related losses.
By integrating over a century of weather observation data with modern insurance products, the initiative has sought to make national food production more resilient and sustainable.
A central component of this partnership has been the introduction of a weather index agricultural insurance scheme.
Unlike traditional insurance, this model has used measurable climate data to trigger automatic payouts whenever weather conditions, such as rainfall levels, surpass specific thresholds.
Prof. Anosike has explained that this approach, when combined with NiMet’s crop calendar forecasting, has provided farmers with the precise information needed to optimize planting times and boost overall yields.
The Managing Director of REX Insurance, Mrs. Ebelechukwu Nwachukwu, emphasised that the company has embraced new technology to specifically aid smallholder farmers in their long-term planning.
As Nigeria’s oldest insurance provider, REX Insurance has transformed its service delivery to ensure that index-based protection has become a practical reality for rural communities.
Prof. Anosike concluded that accurate climate information has remained the most valuable tool for risk management in the face of increasingly frequent extreme weather events.
