The Edo State Government, through the Office of the First Lady, has empowered 30 women in livestock farming to commemorate the 2025 World Egg Day.
The women received layer mash feed during an event jointly organised by the Animal Science Association of Nigeria and the Poultry Association of Nigeria at the Agricultural Development Programme (ADP) Hub, Oko Ogba, Benin City.
Speaking at the event, the Coordinator, Office of the First Lady, Mrs Edesili Okpebholo Anani, reaffirmed Governor Monday Okpebholo’s commitment to empowering women and advancing agriculture in Edo State.
She noted that the administration aims to position Edo as Nigeria’s food hub through initiatives designed to transform the agricultural sector.
Mrs Anani praised egg farmers, producers, and distributors for their dedication to ensure a steady egg supply to communities.
She emphasised the State Government’s resolve to enhance nutrition, strengthen food security, and promote sustainable agriculture, particularly through women’s empowerment.
“Eggs are a gift from nature, providing high-quality protein, essential vitamins, and minerals,” she said. “They are affordable, versatile, and vital in our diets.
As we celebrate World Egg Day, we must recognise their role in nutrition, food security, and sustainable agriculture.”
Mrs Anani appreciated partners and stakeholders for their support in boosting egg production and empowering women.
She called for greater collaboration to promote egg consumption, support local farmers, and build a more food-secure and agriculturally resilient future.
Representing the Functioning Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, Dr Thomas Haruna commended poultry farmers for their resilience despite challenges.
He reiterated Governor Okpebholo’s appreciation of their contribution to food availability across the state.
“Eggs are nature’s superfood, rich in nutrients that are essential for people of all ages,” Dr Haruna said.
The Director of Animal Husbandry, Mr Enodolomwanyi Otamere, urged stakeholders to explore opportunities in egg production beyond consumption, while the Provost of the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Iguoriakhi, Mr Andrew Omosede, encouraged families to include eggs as part of their daily meals due to their nutritional benefits and versatility.
The event’s highpoint was the presentation of empowerment items to the beneficiaries and an award to Mrs Anani for her outstanding contributions to women’s advancement and agricultural development in Edo State.
