Over 100,000 Jobs Created as Nigeria’s Fertiliser Output Soars
Oluwaseyi Awokunle | 11th August 2025

The Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA) has announced a significant increase in the nation’s agricultural sector, increasing the number of operational fertiliser blending plants from 4 in 2016 to 92 as of July 2025.

The information was revealed during the annual Presidential Fertiliser Initiative (PFI) stakeholder forum in Abuja, where agricultural value chain stakeholders reviewed the programme’s progress and achievements.

The PFI was launched in 2016 to tackle inefficiencies in Nigeria’s fertiliser supply chain and reduce the country’s dependence on imports.

The initiative is guided by the NSIA and the federal government, and has revitalised the fertiliser blending industry.

Since its inception, over 128 million bags of high-quality blended fertiliser have been distributed to farmers, improving both accessibility and affordability nationwide.

The programme has created more than 100,000 direct and indirect jobs nationwide, contributing to food security.

This progress has been achieved despite global supply chain disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Russia-Ukraine conflict, foreign exchange fluctuations, and economic challenges, including the naira devaluation.

In a new development, management of the PFI has been transferred to the Ministry of Finance Incorporated (MOFI).

This move seeks to ensure the programme’s long-term financial and operational sustainability.

The next phase will focus on innovations such as wet blend technology, geographic expansion to underserved regions, and greater private sector participation.

NSIA managing director/CEO Aminu Umar-Sadiq described the programme as a model example of collaboration.

“The PFI is a model of what collaboration between public institutions and the private sector can achieve. We remain committed to strategic partnerships that enhance positive socio-economic outcomes for Nigerians,” he said.
