Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has commissioned a new Mid-Level Agro-Produce Hub at Pen Cinema, Agege, on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, as part of strategic efforts to restructure food distribution across the state.
The facility serves as the third operational node in the state’s expanding hub-and-spoke distribution network, following operational centres in Mushin and Abijo, to shorten supply chains and mitigate post-harvest losses for the state’s 25 million residents.
Speaking at the launch, Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasised that the facility represents a fundamental shift in how the state manages food logistics.
Stressing the necessity of structural reform, Sanwo-Olu stated that: “The commissioning of this Mid-Level Agro-Produce Hub in Agege is not simply the unveiling of another piece of infrastructure. It is the physical expression of a larger vision, one that places food security at the heart of our development agenda.”
He added that because over 70 per cent of Lagos’ food supply originates outside its borders, the administration had to address fragmented supply chains, transportation costs, and price volatility.
The governor highlighted the performance of the network’s pilot site in Mushin, which has recorded over N4 billion in transactions across 228 market days and created more than 7,000 jobs.
The physical hubs are supported by the Produce for Lagos Programme and its N500 billion Offtake Guarantee Fund.
“Rather than producing without certainty about where their output will be sold, farmers now produce against the organised, guaranteed demand of the Lagos market,” Sanwo-Olu explained, confirming that additional mid-level hubs are under construction in Opebi, Bombata, Ikorodu, Apapa, Festac, and the Lekki axis.
Lagos State Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Systems, Abisola Olusanya, disclosed that the 7,000-square-metre Agege facility includes a 4,000-square-metre trading floor for up to 400 vendors, 800 metric tonnes of dry storage, 300 metric tonnes of cold storage, and a dedicated seafood section.
Developed in partnership with Origin Tech Group, the hub is projected to facilitate over N5 billion in annual food transactions once full operations commence.
“From the quality and variety of produce, to the organisation of the trading areas… we want Agege to demonstrate what a modern food market can look like,” Olusanya noted.
