US calls out Nigeria to review ban on agriculture, drug import
Atinuke | 8th April 2025

The United States Trade Representative has condemned Nigeria’s import ban on 25 categories of commodities on Monday, 7th April, saying it restricts American exporters’ access to markets.

Shortly after President Donald Trump imposed tariffs on products entering the United States, Nigeria was subject to a 14% duty.

The USTR emphasised the impact of Nigeria’s import embargo on several industries, including consumer goods, drinks, medicines, and agriculture.

The limitations also impact fruit juices, medications, alcoholic drinks, beef, pigs, poultry, and other goods the US views as major trade obstacles.

The agency argues that these limitations reduce export opportunities for US businesses and lead to lost revenue.

“Nigeria’s import ban on 25 different product categories impacts U.S. exporters, particularly in agriculture, pharmaceuticals, beverages, and consumer goods.

“Restrictions on beef, pork, poultry, fruit juices, medicaments, and spirits limit U.S. market access and reduce export opportunities.

Through its X handle, the agency stated, “These policies create significant trade barriers that lead to lost revenue for U.S. businesses looking to expand in the Nigerian market.”

Nigeria banned these 25 items in 2016 to curb imports and promote domestic manufacturing.

Poultry, pork, refined vegetable oil, sugar, cocoa goods, spaghetti, alcohol, and some medications are prohibited.

As part of its drive for clean energy, the federal government also announced plans on March 26, 2025, to stop importing solar panels to promote domestic manufacture.
