The Federal Government has partnered with the Afrigroundnut Farmers Association of Nigeria (AGFAN) to increase productivity and drive sustainable economic growth.

During a meeting in Abuja on Monday, 30 March 2026, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, detailed the critical role of groundnut production in Nigeria’s history and its potential as a pathway for future prosperity.

Represented by Dr. Ibrahim Abubakar Kana, the SGF is to strengthen the sector to ensure food security, while recalling the economic significance of the famous groundnut pyramids of the 1940s and 1950s.

The partnership focuses on providing farmers with the resources they need to scale production and compete globally.

Akume commended AGFAN for its alignment with the administration’s vision and urged the association to continue its nationwide mobilisation.

The SGF noted, “The L-PRES Project provides a strong platform to actualise our vision of a modern, productive, and resilient livestock sector”.

“Our focus is on practical interventions that will improve productivity, strengthen animal health systems, and create sustainable value across the livestock chain.”

He reiterated that strengthening agriculture remains a top priority for the Presidency.

Earlier, AGFAN President Abdullahi Muhammad Isa assured the government that the association is ready to operate within a sustainable framework to maximise the support they received.

He emphasised that the provision of seedlings, fertilisers, and modern equipment would translate directly into improved economic returns for farmers.

“We are committed to supporting a platform that aligns with our aspirations and enables us to contribute meaningfully to Nigeria’s development,” Isa said.

He specifically stressed that mechanisation is the key to achieving the large-scale output required for the export market.

The association also reaffirmed its political support for the current administration, pledging to mobilise its members across the 36 states.

The Federal Government, in turn, promised to ensure that agricultural interventions are functional and accessible at the grassroots level.

By focusing on efficiency and value addition, the collaboration will restore Nigeria’s position as a leading groundnut producer, creating thousands of direct and indirect jobs in the process.
