FG Releases High-Yield MoorBeta Chicken to Support Food Security

The Federal Ministry of Livestock Development has officially approved and released MoorBeta, an improved indigenous meat-type chicken designed to enhance poultry production and food security.

The National Crop Varieties and Livestock Breeds Registration and Release Committee (NVRC) formalised the registration of the new breed on 26 March 2026 at the National Centre for Genetic Resources and Biotechnology (NACGRAB) in Ibadan.

This initiative will provide smallholder farmers with a high-yielding, climate-resilient bird that achieves an average live weight of 2.8 kg within just ten weeks, following over a decade of intensive breeding work by the Institute of Agricultural Research and Training (IAR&T).

The new breed offers significant advantages for both commercial operators and rural farmers due to its adaptability to tropical climates.

The MoorBeta also demonstrates a survival rate exceeding 95 per cent and a high tolerance to heat stress.

The Ministry noted that the bird possesses qualities that make it attractive to consumers, including tender, juicy meat with minimal cooking loss.

It features a large single comb and a robust frame that supports superior meat yield compared to traditional local varieties.

Economic analysis indicates that the breed is a highly viable option for poverty alleviation and income generation.

A 2025 cost evaluation suggests that raising a batch of 100 birds can generate a net profit exceeding N278,000 within a single 10-week cycle.

The Ministry stated, “The L-PRES Project provides a strong platform to actualise our vision of a modern, productive, and resilient livestock sector.

Our focus is on practical interventions that will improve productivity, strengthen animal health systems, and create sustainable value across the livestock chain.”

The release of MoorBeta represents a major step in the Federal Government’s effort to improve local livestock genetics and reduce reliance on expensive imported parent stock.

By collaborating with research institutions like the Obafemi Awolowo University’s Moor Plantation, the Ministry seeks to increase rural incomes and strengthen nutrition security across the federation.

The distribution of MoorBeta is expected to empower thousands of poultry value chain actors, providing a compelling return on investment while ensuring a steady supply of high-quality protein for the Nigerian market.
