Governor Pastor Umo Eno has announced the commissioning of Akwa-Ibom State’s first Agric Equipment Leasing Company to transition the state from subsistence methods to full-scale mechanised farming to ensure food sufficiency and increased earnings for local producers.
During a progress inspection at the facility in Ekpri Nsukara, Uyo, the Governor expressed satisfaction with the construction pace and confirmed that the project has reached its final stages.
To support this transition, the administration has acquired over 25 tractors equipped with advanced tracking devices, along with low-bed vehicles and various implements ranging from ploughs to harvesters.
Governor Eno explained that these machines are to be leased to farmers across the State at highly subsidised rates.
This model intends to remove the high cost of equipment ownership, allowing smallholder and commercial farmers alike to scale their operations and improve crop yields as the new farming season begins.
In addition to mechanisation, the Governor has reaffirmed that the state’s tree-crop revolution programme has been scheduled to commence with the onset of the rainy season.
The government has already established nurseries for palm tree seedlings and has completed a comprehensive enumeration of farmers nationwide.
Within the next two weeks, these seedlings will be slated for distribution to verified farmers, a move the Governor has described as essential for the long-term growth of Akwa Ibom’s agricultural economy.
