Kaduna State Maize farmers have reported losses exceeding 10 billion naira during the 2025 farming season, citing a steep crash in maize prices that has wiped out their investments.
The affected farmers, numbering over 2,100, are urging the Federal Government to intervene urgently to prevent the collapse of the sector and avert a looming threat to national food security.
Farmers revealed that soaring fertiliser and input prices have drastically increased the cost of production.
Cultivating one hectare of maize now costs over 2 million naira, while market prices for maize have fallen by roughly 50%, leaving farmers unable to recover their expenses.
Operating under a maize farming scheme coordinated by Alhaji Rufai Muazu Dikko, also known as Sarkin Labar, the farmers cultivated about 10,000 hectares across Igabi, Soba, Kauru, Zaria, and Sabon Gari Local Government Areas. From an estimated harvest of 450,000 bags, they calculated total losses exceeding 10.16 billion naira.
In a letter addressed to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, the Minister of Agriculture, the CBN Governor, and Kaduna’s three Senators, the farmers requested free or heavily subsidised inputs for the 2026 season, offering to repay in maize after harvest.
They stressed that immediate action is essential to ensure the continuation of maize cultivation and safeguard the nation’s food supply.
Without timely intervention, the farmers warned that many could abandon maize production entirely, compounding existing challenges tofood security.
Preparations for the next planting season are already underway, underscoring the need for prompt government action.
