Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa state has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Angola’s Bengo province, forging cooperation in agriculture, mining and education to drive sustainable livelihoods and youth employment in Nasarawa state.
Speaking after the signing ceremony in Lafia on Tuesday, Governor Sule highlighted the pact’s potential to transform local communities.
“This MoU will have a significant impact on our people once implementation begins,” he said, noting the similarities between Nasarawa’s proximity to Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory and Bengo’s closeness to Angola’s capital, Luanda.
The agreement targets areas of comparative advantage, with Nasarawa leveraging its expertise in mining, oil, and gas, while tapping into Bengo’s agricultural knowledge.
“We have identified where Bengo excels in farming and where Nasarawa leads,” Sule explained, emphasising climate-smart practices and youth involvement to boost food security and rural jobs.
A standout feature is the launch of a ‘One-Stop Shop Investment House’ for Angolan investors, streamlining opportunities in Nasarawa’s agribusiness sector.
Bengo governor Dr Maria Nelumba described the MoU as a “historic milestone” that transcends paperwork.
“It reflects brotherhood between Nigeria and Angola, advancing economic growth, environmental sustainability and social development,” she stated.
The deal positions Nasarawa as a pioneer in interstate agricultural partnerships, uniquely blending cross-continental expertise to tackle youth unemployment and promote resilient farming amid climate challenges.
Implementation teams from both sides have already mapped common ground, paving the way for immediate action.
