The Federal Government has commissioned a state-of-the-art veterinary hospital in Yola-North Local Government Area, promoting livestock health services in Adamawa State and across Nigeria.

The facility, funded by the World Bank through the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project (L-PRES) under the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development, was inaugurated by the Minister of Livestock Development, Alhaji Idi Maiha.

Maiha described the new hospital as a significant milestone in the administration’s efforts to reposition the livestock sector.

He highlighted that President Bola Tinubu’s decision to establish a dedicated livestock ministry, the first in 64 years, reflects renewed national commitment to modernising animal health and production systems.

“We are witnessing the beginning of a new era in livestock development. There is no more neglect,” the minister stated.

Under the L-PRES initiative, seven model veterinary hospitals have already been completed and equipped across Adamawa, Sokoto, Enugu, Niger, Ondo, Edo and Borno States, with an additional 14 facilities at various stages of completion.

The National Coordinator of L-PRES, Dr Sanusi Abubakar, noted that the facility is equipped with modern technologies designed to reduce livestock mortality, increase productivity, and provide economic benefits for pastoralists and commercial livestock producers.

He also highlighted nationwide achievements, including the construction of ultramodern abattoirs with advanced waste management systems in five states, as well as the renovation or establishment of more than 100 slaughter slabs in 20 states, to strengthen the beef value chain.

Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, represented by his Chief of Staff, Dr Edgar Amos, urged livestock owners in Adamawa to take full advantage of the hospital to ensure healthier herds and improved outputs.

The Lamido of Adamawa, Dr Barkindo Musdafa, Grand Patron of Pastoralists Worldwide, also commended the Federal Government’s commitment to the sector and pledged to continue mobilising livestock farmers to benefit from the initiative.
