Jigawa State Governor, Malam Umar Namadi, has revealed that the most sustainable solution to poverty in Northern Nigeria lies in unlocking the region’s vast agricultural potential and converting it into measurable economic value.

The governor made this statement on Saturday in Kaduna during the 25th anniversary celebration of the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) and the official launch of its endowment fund.

The event was attended by northern leaders, members of the Federal Executive Council, representatives from the National Assembly, traditional rulers and other prominent stakeholders.

Governor Namadi praised the ACF for its 25 years of commitment to unity, peace and regional development, noting that the forum’s legacy of dialogue and cooperation provides a strong platform for progress not only in the North but across the entire country.

While acknowledging the persistent threat of insecurity in the region, the governor stressed that poverty remains one of its leading root causes.

He emphasised that Northern Nigeria is richly endowed with fertile land, natural resources and a large labour force,  assets which, if effectively harnessed, can transform the region into an agricultural powerhouse capable of lifting millions out of poverty.

“As leaders, we understand that insecurity in many cases is linked to poverty. Yet, with the vast resources and opportunities available to us, there is no reason for Northern Nigeria to remain trapped in poverty. This is why we are committed to transforming agriculture across the region,” he said.

According to the governor, ongoing agricultural reforms, supported by the ACF, the Northern Governors Forum and the Federal Government, are already laying the groundwork for long-term economic recovery.

These reforms, he explained, aim to expand food production, strengthen value chains, create employment and ensure sustainable livelihoods for young people and rural communities.

“By transforming agriculture, we can generate jobs and provide sustainable livelihoods for millions of our people. This is a responsibility we must all take seriously. With the continued support of the ACF and the commitment of the Federal Government, I am confident that Northern Nigeria can rebuild its agricultural landscape,” Namadi added.

He further assured stakeholders that the Northern Governors Forum would continue working closely with regional and federal partners to accelerate development efforts and move the region forward.

Governor Namadi concluded by congratulating the ACF on its silver jubilee and commending its enduring role in promoting unity, peace and national cohesion.

“I congratulate you on this important milestone and commend your tireless efforts in promoting peace and unity in Northern Nigeria and in the country as a whole,” he said.
