Israel urges Nigeria to embrace modern irrigation for higher yields
Atinuke | 26th March 2025

Michael Freeman, Israel’s Ambassador to Nigeria, has urged the country to use drip irrigation technology to increase agricultural productivity and lower expenses.

During a courtesy visit to Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang at the Old Government House in Rayfield, Jos, Ambassador Freeman emphasised the need for water-efficient farming techniques.

He highlighted Israel’s accomplishment in producing rice with only 5,000 litres of water, as opposed to the previous requirement of over 600,000 litres, demonstrating the benefits of drip irrigation.

Freeman highlighted Israel’s willingness to work with Plateau State to maximise its agricultural potential, improve food security, and combat poverty. He also emphasised the need for human capital development, citing Israel’s investment in personnel as a contributor to its GDP growth of over 45%.

The Ambassador urged stronger cooperation in agriculture, health, and security, which he described as critical to job creation and economic growth in Nigeria.

Governor Mutfwang hailed the agreement, characterising it as an essential opportunity to modernise Plateau agriculture. He also emphasised the state’s ambitions to build a medical college at Plateau State University (PLASU) and requested Israel’s assistance in establishing the state as a medical tourism destination.

With Israel’s expertise and technology, Plateau has the potential to change its agricultural and healthcare sectors, paving the way for sustainable development and setting a benchmark for Nigeria.
