The Jigawa State Government has empowered 400 young people with practical skills and resources in date-palm cultivation, in a bid to reduce youth unemployment and boost agricultural development.
Governor Umar Namadi, who spoke at the Yakubu Gowon NYSC Orientation Camp graduation ceremony in Fanisau, Dutse, said the initiative is part of the government’s strategy to diversify the economy while promoting environmental sustainability.
“This pilot scheme aims to equip young people with skills and resources to build sustainable livelihoods,” Namadi said.
Under the programme, each beneficiary will manage half a hectare of land, with about 200 date-palm trees planted in designated clusters.
Beyond technical training, the state government will provide a monthly allowance for two years, alongside industrial boreholes and other farm support.
According to the governor, the beneficiaries were selected equally from Birniwa, Yankwashi, Babura, and Sule Tankarkar local government areas.
Namadi stressed that the government’s commitment goes beyond training. “We want to empower our youths to be self-reliant and contribute positively to the state’s economy,” he said, assuring that more job creation and agricultural programmes are underway.
Aminu Musa from Birniwa LGA said, “This programme has given me hope and a real chance to support my family. I am excited to start cultivating date palms and build a better future.”
Similarly, Yusuf Sani from Babura LGA shared, “Before this, I had no clear source of income, but now, with the skills and monthly support, I can confidently plan for my future.”
Other beneficiaries praised the state government for combining training with financial support, noting that it would make their transition into farming much easier.
Date-palm farming is not new to Jigawa State. For decades, it has served both economic and environmental purposes, helping farmers earn income while combating desertification.
However, this new focus on youth participation positions the crop as a driver of modern agricultural transformation and rural job creation.
