248,000 Nigerian Farmers to Access Insurance Through Public-Private Partnership

Leadway Assurance, in partnership with PFSCU, state governments, and PULA Foundation, is set to provide climate-smart insurance and agricultural solutions to 248,000 smallholder farmers across eight Nigerian states to shield them from climate-related risks that threaten food security.

The participating states include Borno, Enugu, Taraba, Ekiti, Kaduna, Nasarawa, Plateau, and Jigawa. Through the partnership, state governments subsidise 50% of insurance premiums, while the remaining portion is covered by PULA and BAYER foundations through donor financing.

This innovative structure ensures farmers, many of whom are highly vulnerable to droughts, floods, and pest outbreaks, can access affordable protection, enabling them to secure their livelihoods and maintain agricultural productivity.

The Harvesting Hope Caravan, a nationwide roadshow across four geopolitical zones, will further strengthen the initiative. While the caravan focuses on grassroots engagement, awareness-building, and education, it forms part of a broader effort to equip farmers with practical tools and strategies to adapt to climate change.

Speaking on the partnership, Ayoola Fatona, Global Head of Agricultural Risk Solutions at Leadway Assurance, stated,  ” This partnership is more than selling insurance; it is about building a climate-smart agricultural landscape that is resilient, inclusive, and sustainable.

“With PFSCU, PULA, and state governments, we are helping farmers secure their livelihoods, encouraging innovation, and safeguarding Nigeria’s food systems for the future.”

Gboyega Lesi, Managing Director of Leadway Assurance, added,” At Leadway, we recognise the urgent need to strengthen Nigeria’s agricultural landscape in the face of climate change”.

“Our role goes beyond risk transfer; we enable farmers with knowledge, advisory services, and access to solutions that make them more resilient”.
