Enugu Rolls Out Year-long Food Distribution to Combat Hunger
Atinuke Ajeniyi | 8th August 2025

Enugu State Government has unveiled a year-long Sustainable Food Distribution Programme to tackle hunger and support vulnerable households, marking a significant step in the fight against food insecurity.

The initiative, launched at the International Conference Centre in Enugu, will begin with 500 households and expand in phases to reach more beneficiaries.

Representing Governor Dr Peter Mbah, the Secretary to the State Government, Prof Chidiebere Onyia, described the programme as a “structured and strategic response to the growing challenge of hunger, not a mere palliative gesture.”

“This is not just a political obligation. It is a moral one,” Onyia stated. “The Sustainable Food Distribution Programme is designed to meet immediate needs and support rural food producers and integrate them into our supply chain, ensuring sustainability.”

The scheme, led by the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Office, aligns with global targets such as SDG 1 (No Poverty), SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), SDG 10 (Reduced Inequality), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).

Highlighting the global scale of the problem, Onyia noted that food insecurity affects more than 735 million people worldwide. He stressed that Enugu is determined to address the crisis with innovation and resolve.

The Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on SDGs, Engr Onyinye Akubuilo-Okpalanma, described the project as a “symbol of shared commitment to ending hunger and promoting inclusive well-being.”

She added, “We are not just giving food. We are investing in hope, dignity, and human development.”

Beyond distribution, the government plans to strengthen agriculture through support for smallholder farmers, including training, provision of agro-inputs, grants, and climate-resilient systems. This approach aims to secure long-term food availability in the state.

Private sector partners, including Sapphire Ceramics Nigeria Limited, Jenew Homes Nig. Ltd., and Enugu East Local Government Council, were commended for their contributions.
