The Kaduna State Government has began the distribution of 400 trucks of fertilisers free of charge to 100,000 smallholder farmers across the state.

Governor Uba Sani, who flagged off the distribution on Saturday at the Murtala Square in Kaduna, described the intervention as a continued demonstration of the government’s commitment to boosting productivity, lowering production costs, and ensuring sustainable livelihoods for farmers.

“In less than two years, we have distributed 900 trucks of fertilisers to 220,000 smallholder farmers,” Governor Sani stated.

“We are the only state where smallholder farmers consistently receive fertilisers and other essential inputs at either no cost or significantly subsidised rates.”

Each beneficiary will receive two bags of fertiliser, while commercial farmers will access up to 10 bags at a 40 per cent subsidised rate bringing the cost per bag to ₦30,000. The governor noted that the subsidy is designed to support commercial-scale farming, create jobs, and stabilise food prices.

“There is no fight between farmers and harvest; everything is in peace,” the governor remarked, speaking directly to one of the farmers present at the event.

The governor revealed a significant increase in the state’s agricultural funding, from ₦1.48 billion in 2023 to ₦74.02 billion in 2025 representing a 4,871 per cent increase. Agriculture now accounts for 10 per cent of Kaduna’s total budget, up from just 0.4 per cent two years ago.

“This fertiliser distribution is not an isolated event,” Sani noted. “It is part of a strategic and systems-based approach to agricultural transformation in Kaduna State.”

The state has also embarked on several long-term initiatives to ensure year-round farming and expansion. These include:

  • Clearing over 20,000 hectares of land
  • Developing modern irrigation infrastructure
  • Building agricultural access roads
  • Introducing rainwater harvesting systems

The Emir of Kaduna, who attended the event, praised the government’s efforts, noting that “any state with food security also enjoys improved health and societal stability.”

The ongoing interventions are expected to improve productivity, ensure market stability, and position Kaduna as a leading food-producing state in Nigeria.
