Mr. Desmond Nkwocha, the founder of Densky Agro Processing Ltd. in Ibadan, Oyo State, has reiterated the need for government support for agribusiness to enhance food security in Nigeria.
In a recent interview in Lagos, he explained that his company cultivates cassava and plantain on a six-acre plot, selling raw materials to industrial manufacturers.
Nkwocha ventured into agribusiness after recognising the critical role of food security in national development. He believes agriculture is essential for survival and aims to invest in this sector to ensure a sufficient food supply.
His company sells unprocessed products, but plans are underway to establish a processing plant.
He noted that Nigeria’s food output is low and urged the government to implement policies that promote investment in agriculture.
The ongoing insecurity, particularly in the North, significantly constricts food access, and he called for improved security measures to alleviate this issue.
Nkwocha encouraged all Nigerians, especially the youth, to engage in farming, regardless of scale.
He refuted the notion that farming is only for older generations, advocating for small-scale initiatives at home.
He stressed that farming can be profitable if approached correctly, with 50-60% returns on investments.
To support agribusiness, he urged the government to enhance security and provide essential inputs like fertilisers and quality seeds, enabling farmers to thrive in a safer environment.
