Morocco-Nigeria gas pipeline set to improve economic cooperation in West Africa
Atinuke | 18th March 2025

Claver Gatete, the executive secretary of the UN Economic Commission for Africa, stated that the gas pipeline intended to link Nigeria with Morocco, traversing 13 West African nations, is expected to significantly enhance energy accessibility and foster regional collaboration.

This remark was made during the 57th Conference of African Ministers of Finance, Planning, and Economic Development in Addis Ababa.

Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari and King Mohammed VI agreed on the project in 2016 as a strategy to strengthen regional energy security.

The pipeline won the support of the West African regional grouping ECOWAS and is in the land acquisition stage. Construction will take place in stages, the first of which will link Morocco to Mauritania and Senegal.

Additionally, Claver Gatete praised Morocco’s efforts to promote green energy, highlighting its export of clean energy, which includes introducing projects like the underwater cable that would connect Morocco to the United Kingdom.

He added that Morocco has committed to assisting African nations in meeting their food security demands through its fertiliser and phosphate manufacturer, OCP. OCP has invested in supplying African markets with specialised and reasonably priced soil nutrients.
