The British American Tobacco Nigeria Foundation (BATNF) has launched a new agricultural initiative in Ekiti State to strengthen maize production and support the transition of smallholder farmers into commercially viable enterprises.
The project, titled The Sustainable Development of Maize Micro-Enterprise Farmers Project, officially commenced on June 17 in Oke-Ako, Ekiti.
The launch ceremony brought together key stakeholders from government, the private sector, and the agricultural development space.
Speaking at the event on behalf of Governor Biodun Oyebanji, Chief of Staff Niyi Adebayo reaffirmed the state government’s dedication to using agriculture as a key tool for economic growth. “This project aligns with our broader vision of sustainable development through agriculture,” he stated.
According to Mr. Oludare Odusanya, General Manager of BATNF, the initiative represents a strategic push to strengthen maize productivity, promote climate-resilient agronomy, and enhance the commercial viability of smallholder farmers.
“This is not just about farming, it’s about empowering farmers to become entrepreneurs and agents of change. Farmers are the backbone of the food system. Supporting them is investing in development,” he said.
The project includes the distribution of improved, high-yield maize seeds, training on sustainable and climate-smart practices, and establishing strong market linkages.
Financial assistance will also be provided to help farmers move from subsistence to commercial farming.
Implementation partners SwagCo and Westlink are overseeing strategic direction and monitoring progress.
The program also features community-driven support structures and enhanced agricultural extension services to sustain long-term outcomes.
Odusanya also commended the role of Odu’a Investment Company in supporting regional agricultural advancement, emphasising the collaborative spirit of the initiative.
“This is proof of what can be achieved when the public sector, private organisations, and development partners work hand-in-hand,” he added.
Addressing the farmers directly, Odusanya concluded, “You are the true champions. No Farmers, No Nation. Great Farmers, Great Nation.”
Present at the event were the Regent of Oke-Ako, Kabiyesi Mrs. Adebayo; Group Managing Director of Odu’a Investment Company, Mr. Abdulraham Yinusa; Chairman of SwagCo, Mr. Owolabi Salami; and Ekiti State’s Honourable Commissioner for Agriculture, Mr. Ebenezer Boluade.
