Zamfara Govt  Empowers Farmers with Over 59,000 Bags of  Fertiliser
Oluwaseyi Awokunle | 10th July 2025

Governor of Zamfara State, Dauda Lawal, has flagged off the distribution of 59,205 bags of fertiliser to farmers across the state, as part of a major push to support the 2025 wet season farming and boost food production.

The event also included the official commissioning of the new Fadama House at the Ministry of Agriculture in Gusau.

The initiative is a central part of the state’s effort to reinforce agriculture as the backbone of Zamfara’s economy, where over 80 per cent of the population depends on farming for survival.

A statement by the Governor’s spokesperson, Sulaiman Bala Idris, revealed that 98 trucks of fertiliser have been dispatched for distribution.

Other farm inputs provided include 34,800 kg of rice seeds, 80,000 kilograms of maize seeds, 23,740 litres of herbicides, 11,735 litres of insecticides, and 23,470 sachets of seed dressing chemicals.

During the ceremony, Governor Lawal stated: “Agriculture remains the lifeblood of our state’s economy. It is not just a sector, but it is the very identity of our people.”

He emphasised that the distribution reflects his administration’s commitment to sustainable agriculture and rural development.

“Our administration has embraced the slogan ‘Farming is Our Pride’. It speaks to the core of who we are and what we must prioritise as a people.

Over 85 per cent of our population relies on agriculture for survival. It is our duty, and indeed our moral obligation, to support and empower them.”

Lawal explained that his agricultural transformation plan aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 2, which focuses on ending hunger and promoting sustainable agriculture.

Despite climate change and a delayed rainy season, the government reaffirmed its resolve to support farmers.

“We invest in seeds, fertilisers, systems, technology, and human capital to achieve long-term impact,” he said.

“Our inclusive vision emphasises women, youth and individuals with special needs as agents of transformation, not just participants.”

The Governor noted that the government has digitised the distribution process to eliminate diversion and ensure inputs reach the intended farmers directly.

“We recognise farmers face hurdles like limited access to inputs, financing, market uncertainties, post-harvest losses and climate change effects. But we’re actively confronting these issues.”

He added that the state is promoting mechanisation, improving extension services, and building access to agro-processing and markets.

In his final message to farmers, Governor Lawal urged responsible use of the farm inputs:

“These inputs are not intended for sale. They are not commodities to be traded for quick gain. They are tools of productivity, investments in your future and the future of Zamfara. Use them wisely, use them responsibly.”
