Lagos First Lady Promotes Urban Farming among Women to Tackle Hunger, Malnutrition
Atinuke Ajeniyi | 24th June 2025

The First Lady of Lagos State, Dr. (Mrs.) Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu has urged women nationwide to implement urban agriculture in their homes to foster food security, enhance household nutrition, and contribute to environmental sustainability.

She made this call during an exclusive interview with the Lagos State Agricultural Development Authority (LSADA) team at her residence, Lagos State House, Marina, on Friday.

The interview was part of activities marking the agency’s 30th anniversary.

Dr. Sanwo-Olu, a food security advocate, encouraged women to embrace urban farming.

She stressed that ample land isn’t necessary, as confined spaces can become agricultural hubs.

“You don’t need a sprawling farm,” she stated, “Urban farming is adaptable and accessible.” She highlighted using discarded buckets, old tires, and containers for home cultivation.

Dr. Sanwo-Olu elaborated on practical methods, such as fish and vegetable farming in limited spaces, which offer nutritious food and economic empowerment.

Her message: urban agriculture is key to sustainable living, transforming urban areas into productive food zones, and empowering individuals.

She further highlighted the importance of using modern techniques such as hydroponics – an innovative soil-less farming method ideal for urban areas with limited space.

“This technique allows people without land to still grow their food efficiently, even in urban apartments,” she noted.

Dr. Sanwo-Olu highlighted the “Every Home a Garden” project, an initiative to encourage home-based agriculture among residents.

This project, which promotes using readily available materials and techniques, aligns with Senator Oluremi Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Initiative.

The First Lady of Nigeria’s initiative empowers women and youth nationwide through agricultural development.
