The Nigerian Environmental Study Action Team (NEST) is set to host a national conference to accelerate climate action and chart a new course for Nigeria’s sustainable development beyond 2030.
The two-day event, scheduled for Thursday, May 22, and Friday, May 23, 2025, will be held at the National Universities Commission’s Idris Abdukadir Auditorium in Maitama, Abuja.
The conference, which has as its theme “From NASPA-CCN to the Climate Change Act: Mapping the Pathway Beyond 2030 Towards Sustainable Development in Nigeria,” will bring together representatives from the public and business sectors.
Participants will engage with various sub-themes that delve into Nigeria’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), climate-proofing agriculture, green growth, renewable energy, inclusive climate governance, and nature-based solutions.
Key highlights of the event include the launch of the NEST Centenary Book and an Honours Award to Emeritus Professor D.U.U. Okali, a pioneer in Nigeria’s environmental advocacy. Professor Haruna Kuje Ayuba, Vice Chancellor of Bingham University, will chair the opening ceremony, with the Honourable Minister of Environment, Balarabe Abbas Lawal, as the special guest of honour.
Other attendees include the Honourable Nkemkama Kama, House Committee on Climate Change and Security chairman, and Dr. Peter Tarfa, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Labour and Productivity.
The conference also promises exhibitions and strategic dialogue sessions to mobilise climate finance, boost institutional frameworks, and reinforce Nigeria’s resilience efforts.
