Atinuke Ajeniyi | 30th April 2025

The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security has revealed an important development in the effort to increase food and nutrition safety in Nigeria.

According to Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari the federal government plans to introduce zinc rice types, notably Faro 71 and Faro 72, to address significant issues in rice production and improve nutrition Security.

The Minister told reporters in Abuja on Tuesday, April 29, 2025, that the zinc rice varieties would greatly improve food and nutrition security for Nigeria’s smallholder farmers, who rely on rice for both revenue and nourishment.

“The introduction of these varieties is a proactive step towards addressing the nutritional challenges faced by our people,” Sen. Kyari said during a briefing on the official release of Biofortified Zinc Rice Varieties in Nigeria.

Kyari emphasised that the new zinc rice varieties provide higher zinc content, yield, and climate resilience, adapting to Savanna and Rainforest ecologies. He added that this will boost farmers’ productivity, income, and the nutritional value of their crops.

The Minister emphasised that introducing these varieties is part of the government’s efforts to enhance food and nutrition security, particularly for vulnerable populations.

“We are committed to ensuring that our people have access to nutritious food, and this initiative is a significant step in that direction,” he said.

The introduction of zinc rice varieties is expected to significantly impact smallholder farmers, who are the backbone of Nigeria’s agricultural sector. These farmers can improve their livelihoods and contribute to the country’s food security by increasing their productivity and income.

Developing zinc rice varieties is a proactive move towards addressing the nation’s ongoing food production and nutrition issues and guaranteeing a better future for Nigerian farmers and citizens.
