The National Onion Producers, Processors and Marketers Association of Nigeria (NOPPMAN) has lifted its suspension on onion exports from Nigeria to Ghana, paving the way for the immediate resumption of cross-border trade between the two countries. 

Announced in a public notice on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, signed by NOPPMAN President Alhaji Aliyu Isah Maitasamu, the decision follows diplomatic consultations with the Ministries of Trade of Nigeria and Ghana, diplomatic missions, and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

The association had previously halted onion shipments following disputes over the reception, space allocation, and offloading of consignments at the Kotoku Market in Ghana. 

The friction had sparked safety concerns for Nigerian and Nigerien traders, truck drivers, and physical cargo. NOPPMAN noted that subsequent interventions and commitments toward a structured trade framework made it possible to withdraw the suspension.

While authorising the immediate movement of onion cargoes, NOPPMAN instructed exporters and transporters to strictly comply with customs procedures, phytosanitary requirements, ECOWAS trade regulations, and African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) protocols. 

Maitasamu urged Ghanaian authorities and market stakeholders to reciprocate by guaranteeing unhindered market access, safe reception, and fair offloading conditions.

He emphasised that future commercial disagreements must be resolved through established dialogue rather than intimidation or retaliatory actions, laying the groundwork for a permanent, transparent regional onion trade framework.
