Over 3,000 Rural Residents To Benefit From Enugu Social Support Scheme

The Enugu State Government has launched a new phase of its social intervention programme, Nigeria Community Action for Resilience and Economic Stimulus (NG-CARES), targeting more than 3,000 beneficiaries across rural communities in the state.

The initiative, implemented through the State Community and Social Development Agency (CSDA), will improve living conditions at the grassroots level through investments in water supply, sanitation, and small-scale enterprise support.

The programme is designed to address the economic challenges facing rural households, many of whom rely on smallholder farming and informal businesses for their livelihoods.

Speaking on behalf of Governor Peter Mbah, the Secretary to the State Government, Chidiebere Onyia, said the intervention aligns with the administration’s commitment to inclusive development.

He stated that the programme was introduced to address the economic realities facing rural communities and to provide targeted support that improves both welfare and productivity.

According to Onyia, the intervention will deliver solar-powered water facilities to improve access to clean water, a critical resource for both household use and small-scale agricultural activities such as irrigation and livestock care.

The programme will also include the construction of hygienic sanitation systems to improve public health in rural areas.

In addition, financial and material support will be provided to boost livelihoods, particularly for smallholder farmers and rural entrepreneurs.

He explained that community participation would play a central role in identifying needs and ensuring that projects are effectively executed at the local level.

The small-scale enterprise component of the programme is expected to support income-generating activities, including agro-processing, trading, and other rural businesses linked to agriculture.

By improving access to basic infrastructure and providing direct support, the initiative aims to strengthen local economies and enhance resilience among vulnerable populations.

Meanwhile, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation has commended the Enugu State Government for its Smart Schools initiative.

The commendation was delivered by Jean-Paul Ngome Abiaga during a visit to the Government House in Enugu.

Abiaga noted that the organisation was impressed by the scale, speed, and vision behind the state’s education reforms, particularly the establishment of over 260 Smart Green Schools.

The education initiative is expected to complement broader development efforts by building human capital, including skills relevant to agriculture, technology, and rural enterprise.

UNESCO also pledged to partner with the state in areas such as teacher training, digital education development, and the promotion of cultural heritage.
