Governor Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia of Benue State has signed the $530 million Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Monday, 16 March 2026, at Government House, Makurdi  to establish an integrated agro-industrial estate to modernise the state’s farming economy.

The agreement, which has been formalised with AGROBENUE Industrial Development (ABID) and its technical partners.

This strategic intervention sought to transition Benue from subsistence practices to a commercially driven, industrialised hub capable of processing and distributing produce to global markets.

Governor Alia described the initiative as a vital move to unlock the economic potential of the “Food Basket of the Nation” through value addition and expanded market access.

He noted that the proposed $530 million investment has been designed to support a comprehensive estate covering the entire agricultural value chain, including production, storage, and logistics.

This infrastructure has been intended to significantly reduce post-harvest losses, improve food availability, and increase the incomes of local farmers while generating thousands of direct and indirect employment opportunities for the youth.

Speaking during the ceremony, Governor Alia has stated, “The move is a significant milestone in the journey of Benue State toward sustainable agricultural transformation and economic prosperity.”

He further explained, “Our administration recognises that the future of agriculture lies not only in production but in value addition, processing, industrialisation and market expansion.”

The Governor also clarified the policy direction of the project, saying, “It is therefore the policy direction of this administration to transform agriculture from subsistence farming into a modern, commercial, and industrial sector that will drive economic growth, create employment, and enhance food security.”

The administration completed the necessary groundwork, including land surveys and required documentation, to ensure a seamless implementation.

Governor Alia confirmed that a Steering and Technical Committee has been established to coordinate activities and ensure transparency throughout the project.

He concluded by highlighting the regional ambition of the deal, noting, “Our vision is to position Benue State as a leading agro-industrial hub in Nigeria and West Africa, where agricultural products are processed, packaged, and exported with global standards.”
