The Ekiti State Government has launched an initiative through its successful “Ilu Eye” Food Programme, popularly known as Ounje Ekiti  to improve food security and reduce poverty within the state.

Residents across the state have commended the initiative, describing it as a timely intervention that has enabled households to purchase essential commodities, including rice, maize, beans, and garri, at significantly reduced rates.

Beneficiaries at key outlets such as Shasha BAO, Agric Olope, and the Fountain Agricultural Marketing Agency (FAMA) noted that the programme provided much-needed financial relief amidst the rising cost of living.

The Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, Mr Ebenezer Boluwade, explained that the initiative was conceived as a strategic response to the dual challenges of food insecurity and post-harvest losses.

By focusing on enhanced storage, aggregation, and efficient distribution, the programme ensures that residents access affordable food while local farmers gain a reliable market for their produce.

In response to high demand, Boluwade confirmed that the state is already taking steps to expand the number of outlets to ensure that the benefits of the programme reach all corners of Ekiti.

To maintain the integrity of the scheme, the Fountain Agricultural Marketing Agency (FAMA) has introduced measures to discourage the hoarding of subsidised items.

The Executive Secretary of FAMA, Mr Adedayo Alofe, and the Director of Marketing Operations, Mrs Adegboye Olubusola, both emphasised that these controls are essential to ensure fair distribution and long-term sustainability.

The programme is also praised for strengthening the agricultural value chain and boosting the local economy by providing a direct link between the farm gate and the dining table.
