Minister Pushes for More Bank Financing for Livestock Farmers as Milk Centres Open in Tanzania

The Minister for Livestock and Fisheries, Dr. Bashiru Ally Kakurwa, has called on financial institutions to increase lending to livestock production groups to drive productivity and bolster government revenue as the Tanzanian government launches new milk collection centres at Maruku, Nshamba, and Kihanga.

During a one-day tour of the Kagera Region on Monday, the Minister revealed that under the Tanzania Development Vision 2050, the livestock and fisheries sector is expected to contribute $100 billion toward the nation’s target of a $1 trillion economy.

To achieve this ambitious goal, Dr. Kakurwa emphasised the need for better infrastructure, urging a collaboration between the Prime Minister’s Office (PO-RALG) and TANROADS to construct access roads in high-production areas.

He noted that while Tanzania boasts a massive population of 46 million cattle, milk yields remain disproportionately low.

“Concerted efforts from all stakeholders are needed. The ministry is facilitating loans and providing subsidies for inputs to bridge this gap,” the minister stated.

He commended the Tanzania Agricultural Development Bank (TADB) and Heifer International for their roles in the sector’s growth.

As part of the visit, Dr. Kakurwa distributed 110 improved heifers to farmers in Karagwe District, donated by Kahama Fresh Company.

The company’s director, Mr. Josam Ntangeki, highlighted the success of the “Kopa Ng’ombe, Lipa Ng’ombe” (Borrow a Cow, Pay a Cow) initiative, which has already benefited 361 households, helping them transition to modern dairy farming.
