Governor Dauda Lawal has flagged off the distribution of fertilisers, inputs, and essential farm equipment to dry-season farmers in Zamfara State to bolster agricultural productivity and enhance local livelihoods.
In a statement released on Thursday by the governor’s spokesperson, Sulaiman Idris, Lawal emphasised that the early distribution was a strategic move to improve crop yields, reduce harvest losses, and promote sustainable farming practices.
The initiative is part of a broader effort to reduce the nation’s heavy reliance on food imports by strengthening domestic production.
The assets distributed through the NG-CARES programme include 3,920 bags of NPK fertiliser, 1,956 bags of Urea, 3,920 litres of herbicide, and 1,956 litres of insecticide. Additionally, 3,920 sachets of seed-dressing chemicals were provided to farmers.
Governor Lawal noted that previous iterations of these support programmes have already reached tens of thousands of smallholder farmers, providing them with improved seeds and agronomic guidance.
“Farming is the backbone of our economy, and it is our responsibility to support farmers with the necessary resources to thrive,” the Governor said.
He acknowledged that the state’s current challenges are largely tied to insecurity but reassured the community that the administration would continue to strengthen security architecture to protect farming environments.
Lawal expressed his gratitude to the Federal Government and development partners for their commitment to the NG-CARES programme.
He stated that the programme has significantly improved yields and incomes by combining physical inputs with behavioural enablers such as peer learning and advisory services.
The Governor urged the beneficiaries to use the provided inputs wisely to ensure a prosperous harvest for the state.
