The Federal Ministry of Livestock Development has launched a trilateral collaboration with the United Kingdom and Brazil to improve livestock productivity in Nigeria.
The initiative, discussed during a courtesy visit by the Livestock 247 delegation, will integrate digital technologies, artificial intelligence (AI), and climate-smart practices into cattle systems.
According to the Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Mukhtar Maiha, the project will enhance animal welfare, strengthen climate resilience, and modernise livestock production using emerging technologies.
The initiative will identify and test digital innovations, including smart collars, environmental sensors, remote monitoring devices, and digital record systems. It also plans to strengthen precision animal health and digital surveillance using data-driven approaches.
“Nigeria intends to adopt international best practices and proven systems while prioritising technology and collaboration to transform the domestic livestock industry,” Minister Maiha said.
Epidemiologist Professor Alex Cook, representing the delegation, highlighted how digital tools can revolutionise livestock management. Smart monitoring devices and environmental sensors provide real-time data that traditional methods cannot capture.
“Integrating this information into shared platforms and applying AI can improve feeding systems, boost productivity, increase profitability, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions,” Cook explained.
He also noted Brazil’s success in modernising livestock production over the past 30–40 years, which has contributed significantly to its national economy.
Similarities in climate and ecosystems between Brazil and parts of Nigeria provide opportunities for knowledge transfer.
Cook added that the UK brings expertise in data analytics, AI, and machine learning to support the initiative. He expressed optimism that the combined strengths of all three countries will transform Nigeria’s livestock sector.
The meeting included Directors, Heads of Departments, and the Special Assistant to the Honourable Minister.
