Admin | 6th February 2026

Anambra State has received its allocated vaccines under the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support (L-PRES) Project for the mass vaccination of livestock against major transboundary animal diseases.

The vaccination programme will improve animal health, enhance livestock productivity, and support food safety and national food security.

Sanusi Abubakar, the L-PRES national coordinator, handed over the vaccines in Awka on Thursday.

He said the exercise is part of the federal government’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritises transforming the livestock sector and strengthening national animal health systems.

“The vaccine delivery will cover Abia, Anambra, Imo, Jigawa, Katsina, and Osun, with Ogun and Lagos also participating in the nationwide vaccination exercise,” Abubakar said.

The vaccines include doses for Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD), which targets goats, sheep, and cattle, and for Contagious Bovine Pleuropneumonia (CBPP), primarily for cattle.

The intervention is designed to prevent the spread of transboundary diseases, protect pastoral and farming livelihoods, and improve overall livestock productivity.

Abubakar noted that media coverage will highlight the government’s commitment to livestock sector reforms and showcase the impact of World Bank-supported initiatives in Nigeria.

Rose Ejidike, director of Veterinary Services in Anambra, received the vaccines and reaffirmed the state’s commitment to controlling transboundary animal diseases to enhance livestock productivity and food security.

Officials said the nationwide exercise will cover all states of the federation, strengthening animal health services and maximising livestock productivity across Nigeria.
