The Federal Government says the National Agricultural Growth Scheme and Agro Pocket (NAGS-AP) has produced a total of 2,536,184 metric tons of crops during its four implementation seasons.

Dr Aliyu Abdullahi, Minister of State for Agriculture, announced this on Thursday at the NAGS-AP stakeholders’ workshop in Abuja, held to review the project’s Modified Implementation Framework. The workshop was organised in collaboration with the Bank of Agriculture (BOA).

Abdullahi said the project’s production spanned several phases, including the 2023–2024 dry-season wheat and rice, the 2024 wet-season rice, maize, soybean, millet, and cassava, and the 2024–2025 dry-season wheat. The total value of the produce was estimated at N2.31 trillion.

“The achievement has helped increase food availability and stabilise prices across the country,” Abdullahi said.

“Food prices are currently declining, and efforts are being made to address the high cost of agricultural inputs to balance input and output costs.”

The minister said the workshop aimed to review past activities, examine strengths and weaknesses, and identify areas for improvement to enhance efficiency and impact. He explained that the initiative focuses on six staple crops, wheat, rice, maize, sorghum, soybean, and cassava, under the Food Security Emergency Support programme, as part of the Agricultural Renewed Hope Agenda declared by President Bola Tinubu.

Abdullahi noted that the project is preparing to implement the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) project and NAGS 2.0.

The JICA project will cover rice, maize, soybean, and cassava, while NAGS 2.0 will focus on wheat and rice production starting from the 2026 wet season. The 2025–2026 dry season will focus on rice, maize, and cassava across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

Permanent Secretary Dr Marcus Ogunbiyi said the workshop aims to identify bottlenecks and develop new strategies for project implementation.

National Project Coordinator Ishaku Buba added that NAGS-AP provides farmers with farm inputs, institutional support, and extension services, while quality control officers ensure the provision of reliable fertilisers and seeds for maximum productivity.

Abdullahi concluded that the administration remains committed to supporting agriculture through projects with clear objectives, modern operational frameworks, and technology-driven approaches that ensure measurable results.
