Atinuke Ajeniyi | 26th January 2026

The Federal University of Technology (FUT), Minna, has secured a N1 billion grant from the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) Agricultural Commercial Farm Grant, placing the institution among the top ten beneficiary universities nationwide.

The announcement was made by the university’s vice-chancellor, Faruk Adamu-Kuta, during a press conference held on Monday in Minna to mark the institution’s 34th convocation ceremony and 43rd Founders’ Day anniversary.

The vice-chancellor said the grant is designed to strengthen agricultural research, practical training and commercial farming at the university, aligning with Nigeria’s national objectives for food security and economic diversification.

This development is expected to boost the institution’s capacity to train skilled agricultural professionals and promote innovative farming practices.

In addition to the TETFund award, FUT Minna attracted two major international research grants in 2025.

These include a $3 million ICT development grant from the Agence Française de Développement and a £15,000 Open Access Books grant from the United Kingdom.

The vice-chancellor said these achievements demonstrate growing local and international confidence in FUT Minna’s research capacity, accountability and innovation drive.

The convocation ceremony, scheduled for 1 February 2026, will see 5,297 students graduate from the 2024/2025 academic session.

The graduands include 4,438 first-degree holders, 633 master’s degree recipients, 153 doctoral graduates and 73 postgraduate diploma awardees. Among them, 111 students achieved first-class degrees.

FUT Minna has also been ranked the seventh-best university in Nigeria and the highest-ranked specialised university in the country in the 2026 Times Higher Education World University Rankings.

The vice-chancellor announced the establishment of the College of Medical Sciences and Health Technology, approved by the National Universities Commission, with pioneer students admitted for the 2025/2026 academic session.

The university has completed major infrastructure projects, including a gross anatomy laboratory and a bioinformatics laboratory, and has begun construction of a professorial office complex.

Mr Adamu-Kuta added that FUT Minna underwent an international quality assessment by the UK Quality Assurance Agency in November 2025 and was selected among 28 universities to participate in the TETFund Academic Staff Training Scholarship.

Convocation week activities will include religious services, a convocation lecture, exhibition and project commissioning, sporting events and prize awards.

The vice-chancellor reaffirmed the university’s commitment to academic excellence, innovation and community service, while urging continued partnerships with government, industry and the media to support research commercialisation and global visibility.
