IITA, Nigeria’s Agric Ministry Signs MoU to Improve Soil Health, Fertiliser Efficiency

The International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) and the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (FMAFS) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to improve soil health, fertiliser efficiency, and farm productivity across Nigeria.

Speaking on Thursday, IITA Director-General, Dr Simeon Ehui, said the agreement underpins the Nigeria Farmers Soil Health Scheme and supports the development of a national soil information system.

“The MoU addresses soil fertility challenges and fertiliser inefficiencies through data-driven tools, technology, and regional expertise,” Ehui explained, noting that all activities would be coordinated through the Regional Hub for Fertiliser and Soil Health for West Africa and the Sahel, hosted by IITA.

Dr Ehui added that the initiative elevates soil health from a technical agenda to a national political priority, fostering demand for digital soil maps, crop-specific fertiliser recommendations, and improved laboratory standards.

Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Sen. Abubakar Kyari, stressed that healthy soil is essential for improved productivity and nutritious food systems, while Minister of State, Sen. Aliyu Abdullahi, highlighted the need to address nutrient depletion, erosion, and climate impacts threatening Nigeria’s food security and livelihoods.

The partnership will leverage IITA’s expertise in tropical agriculture and soil science to equip farmers with knowledge and resources that optimise fertiliser use, strengthen land management, and boost climate-resilient agricultural productivity.
