PAN Dismisses Egg Scarcity Claims, says Lagos Has Surplus Supply

The Poultry Association of Nigeria (PAN), Lagos State chapter, has dismissed reports of egg scarcity in the state, insisting that supply remains abundant and prices have stayed relatively low across major markets.

The association’s chairman, Mr Mojeed Iyiola, made this clarification during an interview in Lagos on Tuesday, following concerns raised by consumers over alleged shortages in some areas.

According to Iyiola, egg production in Lagos has remained steady, with farmers recording surplus supply rather than shortages.

He explained that claims of scarcity may be linked to individual traders facing financial constraints, rather than an actual lack of eggs in the market.

“There are eggs available in Lagos presently. There is no scarcity of eggs in Lagos,” he said.

“Where people claim scarcity, it may be because traders do not have the funds to restock, not because eggs are unavailable.”

Iyiola revealed that poultry farmers across Lagos recently sold crates of eggs at discounted prices, ranging from ₦4,800 to ₦5,000 per crate, from December 31, 2025, through the New Year period.

This was slightly below the usual farm gate price of ₦4,900 to ₦5,200 per crate, a move aimed at preventing an egg glut.

He added that government intervention in the poultry sector had played a key role in stabilising prices.

He expressed optimism that further support could lead to additional price reductions ahead of the Easter season.

“If the Lagos State Government extends its intervention, we could see subsidised prices for eggs and chicken during Easter,” Iyiola said.
