Farmers Raise Alarm as Hippos Destroy Crops Across 100 Hectares in Yamaltu-Deba

Farmers in the Hinna Community, Yamaltu-Deba Local Government Area, have raised serious concerns over the escalating number of hippopotamus attacks on farmlands, warning that the situation is threatening both food production and livelihoods.

Mr Zakari Ladan, Head of Farmers in the community, told the News Agency of Nigeria that the growing hippo population, now estimated at more than 40, has destroyed crops across at least 100 hectares since September 2025.

“A single hippo can destroy up to two hectares of farmland in one day,” he said.

The attacks have affected a wide range of crops, including rice, beans, maize, cabbage, carrots, okro, sweet melon, watermelon, and onions.

Estimated losses have reached over ₦180 million, placing immense financial strain on smallholder farmers.

Malam Haruna Hinna, a local farmer, reported that one hectare of carrots alone was worth ₦1.7 million and has now been wiped out.

Farmers say repeated appeals to state authorities, NGOs, and other agencies have yet to yield effective support.

The hippo incursions have also endangered lives. Mr Ladan reported that three community members have been killed, while three others remain hospitalised due to injuries sustained in recent attacks.

“We need urgent government intervention to protect our lives and livelihoods,” he stressed.

Community members are urging both federal and state governments to provide immediate assistance, including farm inputs and protective measures, to help farmers resume cultivation.

They also recommend support for fishermen to adopt fish farming as a safer alternative livelihood.
