Atinuke Ajeniyi | 15th December 2025

Ogun State has partnered with Soilless Farm Lab to transform agricultural practices in Nigeria by training young people in modern, and technology-driven farming practices.

The initiative creates sustainable agribusiness jobs and enhances national food security.

The collaboration was spotlighted during the graduation of the 12th cohort of the Enterprise for Youth in Agriculture (EYIA) programme, a joint effort by the Mastercard Foundation and Soilless Farm Lab.

The project trains young Nigerians in Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) and nutrition to strengthen the vegetable value chain.

Speaking at the ceremony, Dr Angel Adelaja, Senior Special Assistant on Agriculture to the Governor, praised the programme for aligning with Ogun State’s vision to build a technology-driven agricultural economy.

She highlighted government support for previous participants, including five million Naira in grants and access to land, noting that many graduates are now operating thriving ventures that contribute to food security.

Ms Peace Bassey, Project Manager at Soilless Farm Lab, revealed the project’s impact over three years: 12,000 young people were trained, 960 greenhouses were constructed, 240 new companies were established, and graduates secured over N50 million in grants.

The initiative has extended its benefits to local communities, improving infrastructure, education, and local economies.

Paul Idoko, Monitoring and Evaluation Officer, emphasised the organisation’s commitment to combating hunger year-round through continuous greenhouse production.

He reported that training efforts have reached participants from all 36 states, the FCT, and other African countries, with a secondary impact on over 19,000 additional beneficiaries.

The EYIA programme has also supported over 3,200 adult farmers, with backing from partners like the British American Tobacco Foundation.
