The Federal Government of Nigeria has granted a patent to the National Root Crops Research Institute (NRCRI), Umudike, for a suite of optimised turmeric formulations designed to maximise the crop’s health benefits.

Professor Chiedozie Egesi, Executive Director of NRCRI, expressed his gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR on LinkedIn, crediting the Renewed Hope Agenda for creating an enabling environment for scientific innovation.

The newly patented products include non-activated turmeric tea from rhizomes, activated turmeric tea for enhanced curcumin release, and turmeric green tea from leaves. 

Professor Egesi described the development as a major step forward in positioning NRCRI at the forefront of value-added natural products, boosting Nigeria’s bio-economy and contributing to the country’s food and nutrition security goals.

A report shows that commercialisation of the patented formulations is expected in the coming months, with plans for large-scale production and collaboration with private-sector investors.
