Nigeria, Indonesia Deepen Livestock Partnership to Strengthen Modern Breeding Systems
Atinuke Ajeniyi | 9th December 2025

The Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Mukhtar Maiha, has received the Indonesian Ambassador to Nigeria, H.E. Bambang Suharto, in Abuja, in an effort to deepen technology-driven cooperation between the two countries and modernise its livestock sector.

The meeting marked a renewed push to strengthen practical ties, particularly in modern breeding technologies that support productivity, climate resilience, and commercial-scale livestock production.

Addressing the visiting delegation, the Minister highlighted tangible results already emerging from the Nigeria–Indonesia partnership.

He cited the artificial insemination programme carried out in Sokoto and Kebbi States, where Indonesia donated 1,000 semen doses.

The initiative has achieved a 70 per cent success rate and produced 20 calves, a development he described as clear evidence of the impact of targeted technology transfer.

Maiha added that the outcome has reinforced Nigeria’s determination to scale similar interventions nationwide.

He also stated that the next phase of collaboration would focus on expanding breeding-centre development, pasture production, disease surveillance, and certification systems.

According to him, improved genetics and stronger animal-health structures remain essential to securing the livestock value chain and boosting national productivity.

Responding, Ambassador Suharto commended Nigeria’s progress and reiterated Indonesia’s commitment to broaden its technical support.

He disclosed that five livestock professionals from the ministry are scheduled to travel to Indonesia next week for specialised capacity-building, a move expected to enhance local expertise and strengthen institutional partnerships.

Both sides agreed that upcoming programmes will prioritise practical innovations that can transform production systems, improve farmer profitability, and strengthen food security.

The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to accelerate ongoing technical projects that are already delivering measurable results for the livestock sector.
