Uganda has signed a landmark amendment to its Memorandum of Understanding with the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), officially designating Kampala as the home of the WFP Global Fleet Hub, thereby improving regional humanitarian logistics.

The agreement, signed in Munyonyo, positions Uganda as a continental centre for rapid humanitarian response, enhancing the country’s role in coordinating emergency aid across Africa.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs was represented by Ambassador Charles Ssentongo, Chief of Protocol, who delivered the government’s statement reaffirming Uganda’s commitment to multilateral cooperation.

Ambassador Ssentongo praised WFP’s long-standing support for vulnerable communities in Uganda and the wider region. 

He noted that hosting the Global Fleet Hub will not only strengthen emergency response capacity but also create employment and skills development opportunities for the Ugandan people.

The ceremony also included the signing of an amendment authorising the deployment of specialised UN/WFP fleet number plates. 

These plates will allow humanitarian vehicles to move across borders without repeated re-registration, significantly reducing delays during emergency operations.

The Ministry emphasised that the Hub positions Uganda as a key logistics and coordination centre for humanitarian action in Africa, contributing to regional stability, resilience, and timely delivery of aid.

While the Hub primarily supports humanitarian relief, its enhanced logistics network will benefit agricultural supply chains and rural communities in emergencies, ensuring the timely delivery of food aid and agricultural inputs during droughts, floods, or other climate-related crises.
