Atinuke Ajeniyi | 4th December 2025

The Honourable Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Mukhtar Maiha, has concluded a comprehensive inspection tour of key livestock facilities across Enugu State, reaffirming the Federal Government’s commitment to rehabilitating dormant assets and creating new economic opportunities in the sector.

During the tour on Wednesday, 3rd December 2025, the Minister visited the Okpuje Pig and Progeny Centre, a 26.2-hectare facility with a capacity of 3,000 pigs, which was established 43 years ago but left unused for decades.

He praised the host community for safeguarding the centre and emphasised plans to revive it alongside other abandoned livestock investments in the state.

A modular abattoir is also planned to process bacon for both domestic consumption and export markets.

The Executive Chairman of Nsukka Local Government Area, Hon. Engr. Jude Chinedu Asogwa welcomed the initiative, highlighting its alignment with the State Government’s strategy to promote agriculture as a driver of economic prosperity.

Minister Maiha also inspected the Adada Cattle Multiplication Centre, an 847-hectare facility that has remained unutilised. Assessing the site and the Adada Dam, he noted that the Ministry now has a clear plan to bring the centre into full operation.

“This area is a paradise yet to be discovered,” he said, underlining the potential for irrigation to support extensive pasture development.

Highlighting the importance of field-based engagement, the Minister added:

“We must come out to the field, discover the potential, and create the environment for private sector and public-private partnerships to work with us to change the narrative.”

In Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area, Chairman Barr. Chijioke Ezugwu pledged full support for the revitalisation of the centre, emphasising the economic benefits for the local community.

The Minister concluded the tour with a visit to Mary Agro Farms in Udi, an initiative of the Catholic Diocese of Enugu, engaging with livestock stakeholders and reiterating the Federal Government’s determination to harness the sector fully.

The initiative aligns with President Tinubu’s vision to diversify the economy and strengthen the contribution of non-oil sectors to national GDP growth.
