Ethiopia Targets $3 Billion from Coffee Exports Amid 47% Revenue Growth

According to the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Ethiopia’s coffee export revenue increased 47 per cent compared to last year, following a stakeholder meeting to review performance and plan for the next quarter.

The meeting, chaired by the Minister of Agriculture, brought together coffee exporters, distributors, and key industry stakeholders to assess progress in the country’s coffee export business and address challenges affecting the value chain.

In the first quarter, Ethiopia had planned to export 152,000 tonnes of coffee, targeting $622.5 million in revenue. However, by exporting 114,000 tonnes, the country earned $762.5 million, surpassing initial revenue expectations despite shipping a smaller volume.

The minister noted that while the income represents a significant improvement, more effort is needed to expand export volumes and sustain foreign exchange gains.

“Even though the revenue has increased 47 percent compared to the same period of last year, we have agreed that the issue of increasing the amount of expenditure on business should get attention,” the minister said.

The stakeholders agreed to address existing challenges within the coffee market chain to ensure Ethiopia meets its annual target of earning $3 billion from the export of 600,000 tonnes of coffee.

The Ministry has committed to resolving bottlenecks in the coffee trade system, supporting exporters, and strengthening Ethiopia’s position as one of the world’s leading coffee producers and exporters.
