The Oyo State government has commenced a four-day training programme for youths in tractor operation designed to strengthen mechanised farming and create employment opportunities across the state.
The training, which began on Monday at the Ido Local Government Secretariat in Ibadan/Ibarapa zone, is part of the state’s comprehensive plan to bridge the gap created by an ageing workforce of tractor operators while empowering a new generation with critical agricultural skills.
Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Mr Olasunkanmi Olaleye, described the initiative as a strategic step towards ensuring food security and economic growth.
“This programme strengthens our tractorisation agenda, increases agricultural productivity, and provides pathways to employment and economic independence for youths in rural and urban communities,” Olaleye said.
According to him, the training will not only introduce participants to the principles of mechanised farming but also equip them with practical expertise in safe and efficient tractor driving.
To meet high safety standards, participants were also provided with safety kits, including overalls, gloves, boots, and helmets.
The commissioner further revealed that outstanding trainees will be linked with apprenticeship opportunities through the Tractor Owners Association and established tractor hiring companies, offering them real-world exposure and long-term career prospects.
Highlighting the broader impact, Olaleye said the programme will address the state’s shortage of skilled tractor operators and lay a foundation for sustainable mechanised farming practices.
The initiative, running simultaneously in Oke-Ogun and Oyo-Ogbomoso zones, also reflects the state government’s commitment to youth empowerment as part of its agricultural development priorities.
