Nigeria Deploys Solar-Powered Grids to Revamp Grazing Reserves

The Federal Government, through the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development and the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), has formalised a strategic partnership to deploy solar-powered grids across grazing reserves nationwide.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), signed in Abuja, marks a significant step under the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, transforming Nigeria’s livestock industry.

Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Mukhtar Maiha, described the partnership as a game-changer for pastoral communities.

“For too long, the immense potential of Nigeria’s 417 grazing reserves has been hindered by a lack of infrastructure”.

“By providing solar-powered grids to rehabilitated reserves, we are laying the foundation for a more secure, productive, and peaceful future,” he said.

The minister explained that the initiative will power irrigation systems, improve access to fodder and water year-round, enhance education and healthcare services, strengthen security, and create jobs.

Millions of pastoralists and livestock keepers across Nigeria are expected to benefit directly.

Dr. Chinyere Ijeoma Akujobi, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, highlighted the central role of reliable energy in livestock development.

“From the Renewed Hope Villages to the grazing reserves under rehabilitation, none of these interventions can function effectively without energy. This MoU with the REA represents a significant milestone in achieving our goals,” she said.

Experts note that electrifying grazing reserves is crucial for improving livestock productivity, ensuring food security, and promoting sustainable pastoral livelihoods.

By integrating renewable energy solutions into livestock management, the government modernises the sector, attracts youth participation, and boosts Nigeria’s regional agricultural production position.
