A devastating flood has hit several communities in Kunini, Lau Local Government Area of Taraba State, destroying crops, livestock, and household properties worth millions of naira. The disaster followed a heavy downpour that began in the early hours of Thursday.
Residents say the flooding, the first of its kind in the area, has displaced hundreds of families and crippled their main source of livelihood, farming.
Peter Julius, Taraba State Commissioner for Urban and Rural Development and an indigene of Kunini, described the flooding as “massive” and said the immediate focus is on relocating residents to safer ground.
“The flood is ongoing, properties worth millions have been destroyed, livestock carried away, and people left stranded. Our priority now is to move women and children to safety,” Julius said.
Community leader Yohanna Kwana confirmed that the disaster was unprecedented in the history of the settlement.
“We have lived here for centuries. Water used to flow through channels, but it has never taken over people’s houses like today. Our crops are gone, animals drowned, and foodstuffs destroyed. Life will be difficult unless the government and public-spirited individuals come to our aid,” he said.
