The Kwara State government has announced plans to commence cargo services at the General Tunde Idiagbon International Airport, Ilorin, in a bid to transform the state into a hub for agricultural and commercial exports.
Speaking during an event organised by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) in Ilorin, the State Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr. Afees Alabi, said the initiative would strategically position Kwara State in both national and international trade.
“This development will open new export channels, improve market access, and boost incomes for producers and businesses,” Alabi stated.
He explained that the introduction of cargo services will ensure the efficient movement of goods from farms, factories, and workshops to both domestic and global markets.
According to him, this will further promote value addition, processing, and packaging across sectors.
The commissioner emphasised that the initiative would help reduce post-production losses, preserve product quality, and expand trade opportunities for agricultural, industrial, and processed goods.
Also speaking at the event, the Airport Manager, Mr. Suraju Aderibigbe, disclosed that the old terminal building would be upgraded into a modern cargo facility equipped with advanced technology to handle a wide range of products safely.
“The upgrade is expected to boost trade, create jobs, and stimulate economic growth across multiple sectors in the state,” Aderibigbe noted.
The event was attended by key stakeholders, including representatives of the Nigerian Army, Police Force, Immigration Service, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), University of Ilorin, and other organisations.
