The Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) has announced plans to expand its international academic and research collaborations following a landmark visit by Ms. Yan Yuqing, Consul General of the People’s Republic of China in Lagos.
Ms. Yuqing pledged to foster stronger institutional connections between FUNAAB and Chinese agricultural research bodies during her visit.
She emphasised the importance of collaboration and knowledge exchange, promising support for joint seminars, strengthened laboratory networks, and academic partnerships connecting FUNAAB researchers with leading institutions in Beijing and beyond.
According to the university, her commitment is expected to open new frontiers in agricultural innovation and development, positioning FUNAAB as a key player in Sino-Nigerian academic cooperation.
Highlighting China’s ongoing support, Ms. Yuqing noted the establishment of the Chinese Training Centre hosted by FUNAAB, which promotes Chinese language, culture, and traditional medicine.
She also announced plans to expand a charitable initiative in Ogun State, which is focused on assisting economically disadvantaged students and staff.
The Vice-Chancellor of FUNAAB, Professor Babatunde Kehinde, described the visit as a significant milestone in the university’s longstanding relationship with China.
He acknowledged the transformative impact of past collaborations, particularly in capacity building, language training, and academic exchange.
He revealed plans to establish a dedicated Chinese Language School for the Ogun State region.
Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Professor Olukayode Akinyemi, outlined potential areas of expanded collaboration, including joint degrees, staff development, and research.
He praised Ms. Yuqing’s integrity and responsiveness, noting the swift fulfilment of commitments made to the university.
The delegation also included Mr. Li Zhensheng, a researcher with the China-Africa Economic and Trade Promotion Council (CAETPC), who identified six strategic sectors for partnership, ranging from food security and manufacturing to trade services and education.
He further proposed collaboration in mushroom cultivation and medicinal research.
The visit concluded with a tour of FUNAAB’s major research and development facilities, including the 3MW Hybrid Solar Station, the Greenhouse Complex, and the Central Laboratories at the Centre of Excellence in Agricultural Development and Sustainable Environment (CEADESE).
