The Forestry Research Institute of Nigeria (FRIN) has maintained its dedication to sustainable forest management, biodiversity conservation, and climate-smart agricultural practices, aligning with Nigeria’s goal to restore 25 per cent of its forest cover.

FRIN showcased its efforts during a two-day agricultural outreach organised by the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) in Onne, Rivers State.

Themed “Agricultural Innovations and Smart Farming for Agribusiness Entrepreneurs in Southern Nigeria”, the event brought together key stakeholders to promote sustainable agriculture and forestry practices.

At the FRIN exhibition stand, visitors explored various economically viable, multi-purpose tree seedlings, research outputs on indigenous tree species, and interactive biodiversity displays.

The institute also demonstrated innovative conservation and ecosystem restoration methods.

Dr Henry Okonkwo, FRIN Research Scientist at the Onne Station, delivered a presentation on “Conservation of Garcinia Kola Heckel: Emerging Issues and Innovation”.

Joined by fellow research scientists, he highlighted the importance of strategic partnerships, smart farming, and ecosystem services in driving agricultural sustainability.

Representing FRIN’s Director-General, Dr Zacharia B. Yaduma, the Head of the Swamp Forest Research Station, Onne, Dr J.O. Ariwaodu, emphasised Nigeria’s rich ecological diversity, from coastal mangrove swamps in the Niger Delta to the Sahel Savannah in the North.

He stressed the urgent need for collaboration between forestry and agricultural stakeholders to safeguard natural resources and ensure a sustainable future for generations to come.

Through exhibitions, scholarly presentations, and the distribution of quality seedlings, FRIN continues to empower stakeholders with the knowledge and tools needed to adapt to climate change and combat land degradation.
