The Federal Government has restated its commitment to achieving food security and economic diversification through agricultural development.
Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari, gave the assurance during a working visit to the 1,300-hectare Jangwa Rice Farm in Ayarkeke, Awe Local Government Area, Nasarawa State, over the weekend.
The farm, which sources high-quality seeds from Olam Agri, also counts the company as its primary paddy off-taker. It serves as a model for youth and women’s engagement in commercial agriculture to foster sustainable food systems.
Kyari stressed that the Federal Government is focused on transforming Nigeria’s agricultural landscape to meet the nation’s growing food demand.
“The Federal Government’s agricultural policies are aimed at closing the country’s food demand deficit and achieving sustainable food systems,” he said.
Highlighting the need for collaboration, the minister noted that the government would work closely with state administrations and private sector partners to strengthen Nigeria’s food security programme.
He emphasised that the goals could only be achieved through increased investments in food production.
“The youths are the promise of tomorrow. When we invest in them today, we are securing the future of our nation,” Kyari added.
He further revealed plans to boost rice production and cut imports, pointing out that Nasarawa State remains one of the top rice producers in the country and the largest producer of sesame.
Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State, who also addressed the gathering, noted that the initiative had created significant opportunities for youth and women in farming, reducing crime rates in the state.
“Nasarawa remains one of the top rice-producing states and is currently the largest producer of sesame in the country,” Sule said.
This initiative has provided an opportunity to positively engage the youth and women in farming, and it has also reduced crime in the state.”
